Sisterhood - Paid Up Membership Event

Thursday, October 26, 2023 11 Cheshvan 5784

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Sisterhood Paid Up Membership Dinner is our way to thank and acknowledge those women who paid their Sisterhood dues. All those in attendance believe in the importance of belonging and supporting Sisterhood and our affiliation with Women’s League of Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). A portion of your dues ($15 per person) goes to WLCJ which supports the Conservative Jewish movement worldwide, including Tikkun Olam projects in places such as Uganda and Ukraine. With your support, Har Shalom Sisterhood is able to give back to our synagogue, Early Childhood Center and Religious School - financially, programmatically and with women power!

Barbara Ressin will speak about Hedy Lamarr, the natural beauty, actress and inventor who pioneered the technology behind Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Hedy Lamarr was considered “the most beautiful woman in the world.” What is truly remarkable about Hedy Lamarr is that she was a genius and patented an invention in 1941 that led to the use of many of the electronics that we use today. From cell phones to drones, from bar codes to garage door openers, we all are beneficiaries of her imaginative brain. Sadly, none of us were aware of that until the late 1990s, and she never received the attention, acknowledgment by the scientific community, or compensation that she deserved. Her Hollywood career and her many marriages,{6] as well as her beauty, overshadowed her brilliant mind. Her infamous movie made in 1932 in Germany, which featured several nude scenes, was banned in the U.S. She left Europe to head to Hollywood, as did other fellow Jews, due to the rise of Hitler and anti-Semitism in Austria.
